What causes sciatica pain?

Your sciatic nerve is located in your lower back, and travels through your hips and down each of your legs. If you have a herniated disc, it can cause your spine to compress part of the nerve, which results in pain or numbness in one of your legs. The nerve can also be compressed by a tumor or damaged by disease, but this is rare. You are more likely to develop sciatica if you are obese, sit for long periods of time, or have a job that requires a lot of heavy lifting.

What are the symptoms of sciatica?

There are a number of sciatica symptoms, and some of them are similar to other back conditions. Before you find out how to relieve sciatica pain, it is helpful to be able to tell your doctor exactly which symptoms you are experiencing.

The most common symptoms of sciatica include:

  • Burning or tingling down one leg
  • Difficulty moving the affected leg or foot (along with weakness or numbness)
  • Pain in your leg that worsens when sitting down
  • Shooting pain that makes standing up difficult
  • Constant pain on one side of your rear

Typically, sciatica affects one side of your body. The pain can actually start at your lower back and travel all the way down your leg. In some cases, the pain is felt in your foot or toes as well. The level of pain experienced varies for everyone. Some find that the pain is only irritating, but others find that it is constant and severe.
